Wade Bales, a negociant for the past 25 years, approached this collaborative project with one thought in mind: to make a wine that is the best expression of Stellenbosch. It had to be Cabernet Sauvignon because that is this area's strongest calling card. He then identified the prime sites or terroir for Cabernet and the most skilled winemakers for them. His request to the five winemakers was to select and contribute their best vineyard block or barrel to a single wine which best showcases the signature style of the region. And for this wine to be a world-class example. Not much convincing was needed to get the winemakers to buy into the concept. All were involved in the rigorous selection and blending process, tasting multiple blends before consensus was reached. And since winemaking is often a solo pursuit, more than one of them commented on the positivity about being part of a team effort.
