CWG Raats Family Wines The Fountain Terroir Specific Chenin Blanc 2022

R1350,00

“What our industry has been lacking in the past is telling the story. I have travelled endless amounts all over the world to tell the story about what makes South Africa, through Raats Family Wines, through Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Blanc, what makes us unique.” – Bruwer Raats

A benchmark Chenin Blanc selected from a dedicated old vineyard in Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch. The wine tells the story of the unique terroir of the Polkadraai Hills’ decomposed dolomite granite soil. Raats selected a small portion of the block identified as consistently the best to craft one barrel for the CWG Auction. The Fountain Terroir Specific Chenin Blanc was the first wine Bruwer released for the CWG Auction, and he continues this tradition. The wine reflects Bruwer’s lifelong passion and focus for Chenin. The multiple award-winning The Fountain Terroir Specific Chenin Blanc 2017.  This wine received a 5-Star Platter each vintage from inception (2017 – 2020) and has just been nominated again for a 5-Star by John Platter.  Total Production 156 Bottles

Tasting Notes: The aromatics are opulent, showing quince, yellow apple and mandarin orange, with ginger spice adding dimension alongside intensity.

More Information

In the cellar

This single barrel was created exclusively for the CWG Auction, using sustainably farmed vines from our premier trellised Chenin Blanc block in Stellenbosch’s Polkadraai Hills. Vinification is done in small batches using minimum intervention. The wine is fermented and matured in 300 litre French oak barrels (third fill) for 11 months to accentuate soft and luscious flavours.

In the vineyard

Hand-harvested, we reserve the best three rows from our Volstruisfontein vineyard, grown on decomposed dolomite granite, to produce three barrels. From these three barrels we select the best barrel to represent what we consider our finest expression of Chenin Blanc.

About the Wine Estate

t is no secret that Raats Family Wines, under the custodianship of Bruwer Raats, produce some of the most expressive and celebrated Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs in South Africa. With his painstaking attention to detail and quality, Bruwer has earned the reputation as the king of these varieties. It was therefore no co-incidence that in 2017, he was nominated by winemaking legend Boela Gerber from Groot Constantia to join the Guild, recognising his contribution in creating benchmark Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Bruwer accepted this honour with humility and gratitude and has been an active serving Guild member ever since. The annual Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction showcases rare and unique wines produced in small quantities exclusively for the auction by the members of the Guild. The wines have undergone rigorous screening by an independent laboratory before being tasted blind and selected by specialist panels of Guild members. Every year in October the CWG auction is being held at Stellenbosch. All winemakers of the Guild are allowed to present one or two specific wines made only for this event showing great quality basically to market the wine making capabilities of the estate and South Africa in general. That auction is well positioned in the wine industry and every year wine lovers and collectors from all over the world join the event to bid for the finest South African wines. All these wines are being sold in smaller quantities. Most wines stay in South Africa and they are nearly impossible to find in Europe. Except for the wines we are buying at CWG.
