In the cellar
The vines are all planted with the "stok by paaltjie" method on a terraced slope. We harvested the three separate parcels together on the 1st February and whole bunch pressed all together. After a quick settling, the juice were fermented in one 550L Amphorae and a 300L neutral barrel and left on the leese untill preparation for bottling on the 9th October started. The wine was released on the 1st April.
In the vineyard
This is only the 2nd time we harvested grapes from these vineyards planted in 2020 and the first commercial wine released. Stellenbosch’s 2022/2023 season began with mild and dry conditions which had a crucial impact on grape quantity and quality. Drier conditions limited berry mass and subsequently yields, but also ensured outstanding quality. The cool ripening period aided early to mid- season cultivars, and high quality wines were prepared during this time. The ripening of the later varieties and mostly reds were challenged by the onset of early rains.
The vineyards are planted on a rocky terrace of schale and de-composed schale soils. The vineyards are South-West facing.
Cultivar
59% Chenin Blanc; 24% Roussanne; 17% Marsanne
About the Wine Estate
For both Louis and Rianie Strydom, a love and passion for wine, vineyards and soils started at a young age. The logical step was to study and achieve a Diploma at Elsenburg Agriculture College, and a B.Sc Agric in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch. These qualifications and achievements made it possible to take their passion to the next level. Through this constant commitment to wine, they have both been invited to become Cape Winemakers Guild members, a core group of South Africa’s leading winemakers. To be included is a great honour and a humbling experience.
After striving to make wines of excellence for people who share their passion for many years, a moment arrived where opportunity and possibility collided.
From that, they took a leap into the great unknown by purchasing their own land, and planting their own grapes.
Louis looks after the viticulture side of the business and Rianie is then charged with transforming his handiwork into wines that can capture their origins and the personality of where they are grown. The goal is to create wines that will evolve and improve for years to come, and enable us to build a legacy for the Strydom Family brand.
Jean-Louis, the oldest of the three Siblings, having grown up amidst the vines and barrels has now joined the family business as the 2nd generation winemaker. After completing his studies in Viticulture and Oenology at Elsenburg Agricultural College, he travelled North and South to complete vintages in Portugal, Mendoza Argentina, Sonoma California USA and Marlborough New Zealand. He will bring youthful enthusiasm and a fresh perspective to the business. His decision is more than a continuation of a legacy; it’s an infusion of new ideas and modern techniques into a tradition-rich craft.
This new chapter represents a harmonious blend of past and future, promising to elevate the winery’s reputation while preserving its cherished heritage.
