Winshaw The Runaway Pinot Gris 2021

Winshaw The Runaway Pinot Gris 2021

R150,00

Winshaw Vineyards says that the origin of the name of this wine comes from their great grandfather, Dr. William Charles Winshaw who was born in the USA. He ran away from home when he was 12 years old. He travelled around the USA surviving on the odd job and favour, living a life of adventure. With time he studied to be medical doctor and later travelled to South Africa caring for the Queen’s Horses. Later he settled in South Africa where he pursued his passion to become a winemaker. The wine is nice and fresh with hints of Granny Smith apple some pear and white peach. The lees contact adds lovely texture and weight to the palate.

More Information

In the cellar

This wine was whole bunch pressed. It was then naturally fermented in predominantly stainless steel and a small portion in old oak and a fermentation egg. It spent around 6 months on the lees. The wine was later blended before bottling.

In the vineyard

All the grapes came from a block on the Winshaw family's farm, Klein Welmoed in Stellenbosch. All the vineyards are trellised. All grapes are harvested by hand in individual bins in optimal conditions to ensure true quality from beginning to end. The Pinot Gris is picked in three batches. Early pick to add freshness, middle pick to add structure and a small late pick to add body. This wine is predominantly made up of the first two picks.

Ageing

This wine will age well. Drinking well now but should age well of the next five years in the bottle.

Cultivar

Pinot Gris

Food Pairing

It has good depth and Pinot Gris is very versatile with food. Paired well with seafood, pasta or vegetarian dishes. Be adventurous and add some spice.
