Anwilka 2020

R470,00

Bright and deep inky red in appearance. Abundant aromas of dark fruit abound on the nose, backed by delicate oak spices.
Bold and full bodied, the palate is round and voluptuos with concentrated fruit and dry tannins. Complex with flavours of
black fruit, cassis and tomato leaf. The wine concludes with a long and powerful finish. An age-worthy wine that will age
beautifully.

In the cellar

To maximize the potential of Anwilka, vineyard blocks were divided based on site, ripeness levels, and soil types. These sections were hand-harvested and processed separately, and the micro-vinified. Alcoholic fermentation occurred in stainless steel tronconic tanks, with lengthy pump-overs and extended maceration for a gentle extraction of ripe polyphenols. After careful tasting and selection, only the best batches were chosen for the Anwilka first label. They were aged in 60% new 400L French oak barrels for 16 months. Following another rigorous selection, only the finest batches were used for the final blend.

In the vineyard

The 2020 harvest season began with a slightly dry winter, with rainfall below average. Despite windy conditions during the growing season, our vineyards remained intact. The wind caused a delay in budding and later veraison. Harvesting commenced on March 3rd and continued under hot and windy conditions until April 10th.

About the Wine Estate

Based at the south end of Stellenbosch with views of False Bay, the 40 hectare red wine property is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Proximity to the sea provides a specific microclimate that, together with the old ferricrete soils, are perfect for producing rich and focused wines. Under the guidance of internationally well-known Bordeaux wine personalities Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion) and Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe), Anwilka has established a worldwide reputation for this red blend which has been described by Robert Parker as “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”.
