Simonsig Flagship Tiara Magnum (1.5L) Mixed Case 2008 & 2015

Simonsig Flagship Tiara Magnum (1.5L) Mixed Case 2008 & 2015

This is the flagship red wine of Simonsig and reflects the best quality the vintage has delivered. The first Tiara was made in 1990 and upon release in 1992 it was an instant hit being chosen by the Wine of the Month Club as Wine of the year. The 1997 was the first vintage that had Petit Verdot included in the blend. Now you can taste and compare the 2008 and 2015 vintages of this flagship blend in magnum bottles!

Tiara 2008

Cool growing season with rain showers in Feb and March. Weather changed and the last part of the harvest was moderate to warm allowing the Cabernets and Merlot to ripen beautifully. The wine spent 19 months in Frech oak barriques with 60 % new barrels.

Sweet mulberry and violet fruit with earthy forest floor and spicy notes on the nose. Maturation has smoothed the palate to a velvety texture while the firm backbone of the Cabernet gives it a lovely black berry finish. This wane was matured in our cellars for 15 years and is now drinking beautifully.

Tiara 2015

Warm August triggered an early bud break followed by a warm, dry and windy summer which led to an early start to the harvest. Every aspect of the 2015 vintage were in perfect sync and almost like a perfect storm it turned out one of the greateds Cape vintages ever.

Dark Persian carped red with blanch center. Perfumed floral and violet nose with tell tale pencil lead notes. On the palate the lifted flavours of red cherries and crushed red currants are framed by fine grained tannins resulting in a seamless and harmonious wine. Tiara always has a style of elegance and femininity as the name suggests and the 2015 is certainly ons of the most memorable vintages since 1990 when it was first made. Drink now or cellar for longer.

More Information

In the cellar

Cab and Merlot spent a total of 20 days on skins before pressing. Cab franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec was fermented in open top fermenters and a combination of punch downs and pump overs were done during fermentation which lasted 11 to 20 days. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel. Blending took place after 8 months aging, where after it spent another 10 months in barrel before bottling. T0tal 18 months in 80% new French oak and 20% second fill. Three rackings were done during aging.

In the vineyard

Grapes picked at optimum ripeness. Meticulous sorting takes place in the vineyard. Grapes are destemmed to tank and left for two days to cold soak before inoculation. Daily soft pump overs varied between 2 -4 per day, depending on the rate of fermentation.

The Tiara has the body and structure to improve with cellaring up to 2028 but should last much longer. Due to the elegance and fruit intensity, it is also delicious to drink now.

Food Pairing

This wine will pair well with Braised pork belly, Chalmar beef rump and mushroom ravioli.
