In the cellar
Both the pumpover and punch down systems were used for extraction purposes and a portion was taken through to the final blending stage without the use of preservative. After pressing, the wine was racked to
French oak barrels (65% new) for MLF and maturation. After two barrel rackings and 18 months the wine was blended and bottled.
In the vineyard
Optimally ripe Merlot was hand harvested from selected blocks of old vines and the low yields ensure concentration. The healthy fruit was destalked with only 70% being crushed and the balance remained in the form of whole berries.
Monro Merlot is Villiera’s “Reserve” red bottled under the historic family name “MONRO”. It was the obvious choice of brand as it symbolizes the dedication and heritage that are hallmarks of this wine. This wine is
designed to appeal to the consumer looking for greater complexity, terroir character and longevity. From 2016 onwards it will be made exclusively from Merlot to highlight the potential for Merlot in our conditions.
