Simonsig Pinotage 2015

Simonsig Pinotage 2015

R145,00

The first red wine released by Simonsig in 1970 was a Pinotage, a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut first developed by Professor A.I. Perold in 1925.
The aim of this unwooded Pinotage is to accentuate the raspberry fruitiness of the Pinotage grape. Our best Pinotage is grown on weathered shale soils which makes deliciously perfumed Pinotage. The vivacious Pinotage with its rhubarb red colour showcases vibrant sweet cherry and strawberry compote on the nose. The palate further displays depth of fruit with layers of cherry and plum, followed by a light dust of cinnamon. Good concentration and structure is exquisitely finished with juicy, polished tannins.

More Information

In the cellar

After meticulous sorting in the vineyard the grapes are destemmed and crushed to two open top fermenters. A total of 20% of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters. Two days cold soaking before inoculation. Manual punch downs every two hours gives a short, but intensive extraction. Fermentation temperature peaked at 30°C. Pressed after 6 days on the skins, where alcoholic fermentation finished in the tank. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel.

In the vineyard

The 2015 harvest is definitely one for the books. We had the earliest start in decades. Warmer weather in August resulted in earlier bud break, after which a warm, dry, windy summer accelerated ripening by approximately two weeks. The dry weather also led to a very healthy vintage. The healthy vineyards delivered grapes with beautiful layers of fruit and we are very excited about the results of the 2015 vintage

Ageing

Soft and perfectly drinkable now. As this varietal has good ageing potential, this wine can last much longer than expected and will reward your patience richly.

Cultivar

100% Pinotage

Food Pairing

Enjoy with hearty pastas and sundried tomato stew. Alternatively, South African dishes that would benefit from this wine include game dishes such as ostrich steak, springbok or kudu casseroles, and of course a traditional South African Braai.

Awards and Recognition

James Suckling 90 points – 2018

About the Wine Estate

Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name. These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africaʼs first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy lives on through his sons, Francois and Johan, and grandchildren Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig Wine Estate.
