More Information

In the cellar

The Pinotage grapes were selected from vineyards that were carefully pruned to ensure a low yield and concentrated fruit. The grapes were picked early morning at 25˚ Balling and received into the cellar while they were still cool from the night before. In the cellar the grapes were cold soaked for three days before being inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation was done in an open cement tank with regular pushing down of the cap in the first two days.

In the vineyard

On the third day we started pump overs. The wine was pressed on the sixth day at 5 ˚ Balling. The wine was fermented dry in a tank and completed malolactic fermentation a month later. After malolactic fermentation the wine was racked off the lees and put in 225-liter oak barrels. 80% New oak barrels were used of which 70% were American oak and 30% French oak. To preserve fruit, we used barrels with a light toast level. The wine was kept in Barrels for 12 months where after it was bottled. The wine was bottle aged for 18 months before being released.

Ageing

This wine will benefit with some cellering. It can be aged for a further five years if stored in the ideal conditions.

About the Wine Estate

Situated at the foot of Devon Valley and overlooking the Bottelary Hills, Middelvlei wine farm is home to the Momberg family. Their story begins in 1919 when two brothers purchased the farm and has continued for over one hundred years to grow around a strong sense of tradition and family ideals. Today, Brothers Ben and Tinnie Momberg apply the knowledge passed down to them through three generations of winemaking to produce wine of exceptional quality and reputation. Famous for their unique Free-run Pinotage, Middelvlei has shown time and again that traditional methods and attention to detail, both in the vineyard and cellar, hold sway when it comes to creating award winning wines. What they lack for in ostentation, they more than make up for in quality and a rustic authenticity that sets them apart. This approach spills over into their family friendly Boerebraai Restaurant, where they offer a traditional Braai lunch every day of the week, as well as braai-tapas and wine pairings to complement our range of Middelvlei wines.
