R95,00

A full bodied, dry style of rosé with a delicate pale-pink colour. Perfumed and aromatic notes of sweet melon, rose water and summer berries are present on the nose. The acidity is fresh and bright, and compliments the sweet fruit character of the Pinotage varietal. The palate displays intense flavours of red cherries, red apples, melon and raspberries. More Information

In the cellar

The grapes were crushed and immediately pressed to prevent too much colour extraction. The juice was cold fermented at 130C until dry. Kept on the lees for 3 months prior to bottling.

In the vineyard

Harvest 2022 was the latest in the past 25 years, about 2 weeks later than normal. Stellenbosch had a proper cold winter with enough rain, that resulted in budbreak that was 2 weeks late. The earlier part of the season was quite cool, with December showing lower maximum and minimum temperatures. January was more moderate with a couple of hot days. Stellenbosch had slow ripening conditions that resulted in concentrated fruit development and palate weight.

Ageing

This wine is made to be enjoyed now, however, it can be aged for 2 to 3 years from vintage if stored in the correct conditions.

Food Pairing

This wine will pair well with grilled salmon and tuna, sushi, peri-peri prawns, salads, quiche and roast chicken.

About the Wine Estate

The name Kanonkop is derived from a hillock (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain above the wine estate from where, during the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon (kanon) was fired to announce the arrival of sailing ships entering Table Bay. The roar of the cannon would be the signal to local farmers, who were waiting to make the 50-kilometer journey to the harbour, to load up their wagons with fresh fruit and vegetables to barter their produce. The first wines bearing the Kanonkop label were produced in 1973. To wine lovers familiar with the centuries old châteaux and domaines of Bordeaux and Burgundy respectively, the winemaking history of our estate may seem surprisingly young. For 1973 was the year in which Kanonkop’s contention for a place in the annals of South African wine greatness began, just three years before the death of the man to whom the wine estate owes everything it has achieved and all the recognition it has attained: Paul Sauer.
