Meerlust Rubicon 2021

Meerlust Rubicon 2021

R590,00

The drought, coupled with the un-seasonal rain in late spring and during harvest has yielded a slightly lighter bodied, more elegant Rubicon in 2018, but the quality that stands out in this vintage is the purity and definition of the fruit. The character of the fruit profile straddles the fresh red berry fruit and the riper dark cassis fruited notes as well, yielding a wine of considerable verve and vivacity. The tannic structure is currently taught yet dense with high quality, just ripe almost powdery tannin’s.

More Information

In the cellar

2018 was the first vintage where Meerlust re-introduced larger volume French oak foudres for the maturation of the wine. It was surmised that components of these wines raised in a combination of small French Oak barrels of 300 L and the larger format foudres would yield a wider palette at blending for complexity and intrinsic quality. Twelve new French Oak foudres of between 2500 and 4000L were installed in January 2018 in time for vintage. Individual batches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot underwent malo-lactic fermentation and maturation in the foudres and subsequently formed part of the final Rubicon 2018 blend.

In the vineyard

There was some unexpected yet welcome drought relief in October, November and December of 2017 and un-seasonal rain in the middle of February 2018. Providing that disease control measures were in place, (and at Meerlust that was the case under Roelie Joubert in 2018), this rain refreshed the vines and gave a welcome boost to the ripening of the reds in February going into March.

About the Wine Estate

Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument. Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away. Wines are only made from grapes grown on the Estate which is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full, concentrated varietal flavours. The soils consist of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal substrata for producing concentrated, complex wines
